SoundSight, the future system for the visually impaired. Smart::Bits team leader, Theodor Grumeza, enrolled in the campaign "100 Youngsters for Romania's Development" of the Dan Voiculescu Foundation for the Development of Romania

Theodor Grumeza, a doctoral candidate at the West University of Timisoara, Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, illustrates the capacity of innovation and new technology to transform lives. The SoundSight project, coordinated by Theodor Grumeza and developed by the Smart::Bits team, represents a revolutionary solution for individuals with visual impairments. It is designed to enhance their autonomy and accessibility in everyday activities, such as shopping. Theodor has also joined the national campaign "100 Youngsters for Romania's Development," organized by the Dan Voiculescu Foundation for the Development of Romania. This initiative aims to promote and support exceptional young people who contribute to Romania's transformation through their ideas and projects.

The SoundSight device is not merely an assistive device; it is a multifaceted solution that addresses a range of needs. It incorporates sophisticated technologies to address the requirements of visually impaired individuals. The system comprises a camera mounted on a pair of 3D-printed glasses, connected to a Raspberry Pi 5 equipped with an AI module. All components, including a compact battery, are integrated into a bespoke housing unit. The system provides the user with essential information in real time via Bluetooth headsets. This may include barcode scanning or product expiration date detection, delivered through a live video stream. The secret behind this innovation is the use of the Meta LLAMA 2 large-scale language model, combined with advanced image processing techniques. The device was awarded at RoboChallenge, Europe's largest robotics competition, where the jury was impressed by the innovation and functionality of the device.

Theodor Radu Grumeza is the team leader of Smart::Bits, a group of talented students from the West University of Timisoara. Together they have realized three innovative projects:

  1. SoundSight - the system that transforms visual information into audio feedback for the visually impaired.
  2. SpotFinder - a sensor-based system that helps users find the nearest available parking space.
  3. MediTrack - an automated medication dispenser, adaptable to the specific needs of the user.

The team is composed of Daniel Miron, Bogdan Bozga, Răzvan Iovescu, Richard Baczur, Alexandru Beca, Thomas Lazăr, Răzvan Țînca, Tania Giurovici, Marijus Musta, Andrei Vițan, Matei Albu, Alina Roșoga, Teodora Mircea și Flavius Grădinariu.

Through his talent and dedication, Theodor Radu Grumeza demonstrates that technology is not just a tool, but a bridge to inclusion and independence. Innovation knows no limits, and Romania's young researchers are proving this in spades.
