Who is "Little Pythagoras", the Romanian teenager who is conquering, one by one, Mathematical Olympiads around the world. The youngster started doing complicated calculations at an early age, and today he has joined the "100 Youngsters for Romania's Development" campaign.

David Anghel is Romania's mathematical genius. The young Romanian started doing complicated math as early as second grade, through Archimedes and Euclid courses, anticipating a brilliant future in mathematics. Since then, he has been training to win various competitions, conquering national and international competitions with his exceptional skill and intelligence. In grade 4 he qualified for the first Future Olympians camp, and in grade 5 he qualified for the National Mathematics Olympiad, where he won his first silver medal. In grades 5, 6 and 7 she placed first in the National Mathematics Olympiad. In the Stars of Mathematics competition, he took second place twice and first place in grade 8. In the Mathematical Danube Competition he won the silver medal in grade VII and the gold medal in grade VIII. A very important achievement was placing 5th (among the top seniors) in the IMAR 2019 competition. In the 7th grade he won the gold medal at the Balkan Junior Mathematics Olympiad.

But perhaps the most impressive moment in his remarkable journey was when he achieved the top score at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), becoming the first Romanian to achieve this performance in this millennium. It is a historic moment that marks not only David Anghel's personal achievement, but also a victory for the entire mathematical community in Romania. David Anghel solved all the problems perfectly in all the days of the competition, obtaining the maximum possible, a performance achieved by only four other competitors: two from China, one from South Korea and one from the United States. Interestingly, David Anghel is the only non-Asian among them, and he is also the only European among the top ten Olympians worldwide.

David Anghel is currently a grade 12 student at ICHB. He wants to continue his studies in mathematical research, with a special focus on theorem discovery in geometry, an area that constantly fascinates and challenges him.

"My achievements include winning the National Mathematics Olympiad every year (except when it wasn't held due to the pandemic), and in 10th grade I also took gold in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad (BMO). But nothing compares to what I did in grade XI: I started the year by winning the international competition "Romanian Masters of Mathematics", being the only participant with a perfect day, then I won the BMO with the maximum score, being the only participant who solved the last problem, then something historical followed: I got the maximum score at the IMO, being the first Romanian who did that in this millennium. This last competition, IMO, was held in Chiba, Japan, and it was one of the most wonderful experiences I have ever had."”.

At the 2023 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Japan, Romanian Olympians managed to win five gold medals and one silver. This outstanding performance placed Romania first in Europe and fourth in the global rankings, after China, the United States and South Korea.

The young genius not only raises the standard for future generations of mathematicians, but also becomes an ambassador of excellence and of Romania's unlimited potential in mathematics. With a brilliant mind and unwavering determination, David Anghel is a clear example that bold dreams and hard work can lead to extraordinary achievements, and that limitations are only mental constructs that can be overcome.

David Anghel is not only conquering the world of mathematics, but also redefining the standards of excellence in the field. Through his passion and dedication to mathematics, he inspires and motivates not only young people in Romania, but all over the world to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential.

The young mathematician has been enrolled in the "100 Youngsters for Romania's Development" campaign where he uses his talent and passion for mathematics to inspire and motivate future generations. The project launched by Dan Voiculescu Foundation for the Development of Romania brings together talented and gifted young people in Romania. Applications for the project can be made at fundațiadanvoiculescu.ro. The selection of 100 young people will be made from the following categories: education, culture, innovation and sport. The campaign is dedicated to all Romanian children and young people between 5 and 35 years old, living in Romania or abroad.
