Romania has a new champion: Iustin Larion, dominating European chess at just 10 years old, joins the "100 Youngsters for Romania's Development" campaign

At just 10 years old, Iustin Larion is already a respected name in the Romanian and European chess world. With a competitive maturity rare for his age, Iustin has demonstrated that true performance is built on discipline, strategic intelligence and a constant passion for excellence. In recognition of his outstanding results, the young chess player was enrolled in the national campaign "100 Youngsters for Romania's Development", 2025 edition, run by the Dan Voiculescu Foundation for the Development of Romania.

Iustin's record impresses by consistency and the level of competitions won. Among the most important achievements are: European Union Champion 2025 (Mureck, Austria), European School Champion 2025 - gold medal in the Open U11 category (Mamaia), European Youth Team Champion U12 with the Romanian national team (Terme Čatež, Slovenia), National Champion in Rapid Chess U12 (October 2025), 1st place in the ELO 2000 Blitz category (August 2025), 1st place at the Capital Championship in Classical Chess - Seniors, ELO 2000 (February 2025), double National Champion U10 in Classical and Blitz Chess (2024), Capital Champion in Classical Chess and Capital Champion in Blitz (2024), and 1st place at the Satori International Chess Festival. All these results confirm not only his early talent but also his ability to perform consistently at the highest level.

Beyond the podium, Iustin is a multiple national champion and vice national champion, a medal winner with the team in the National Junior Chess Championships, collecting about 70 awards (1st, 2nd and 3rd places) in the competitions held in Bucharest in the last two years - a number that speaks of rhythm, perseverance and ambition.

Competitive by nature, Iustin discovered his motivation right from the very beginning of his career: his first big success came with the first place he won at his second participation in a tournament, a moment that completely changed his trajectory. Since then, every competition has become a lesson and every match an opportunity to evolve. His consecration came with the title of double national champion at the Junior National Championships in Classic and Blitz Chess, results that confirmed his real potential. A member of ACS Oxygen Bucharest and coached by international master Gabriel Mateuță, Iustin divides his time between school and intense chess training. The mind game has helped him develop his patience, concentration and strategic thinking - skills that are also reflected in his school results. Even in difficult moments, when results were not as expected, Iustin chose to turn failures into learning tools, demonstrating a maturity rarely seen at this age.

Looking to the future, the young champion dreams of participating in the World Chess Championships and major international open tournaments. He looks up to Magnus Carlsen, Emanuel Lasker and Garry Kasparov as role models of rigor, creativity and courage, and aims to become an inspiration for other children. For Iustin, chess is not just a sport of the mind, but a real adventure that shapes characters and opens paths. Through his story, Iustin Larion demonstrates that Romania's future is also built through smart moves, made with patience, courage and vision.
