The Dan Voiculescu Foundation for the Development of Romania continues to promote Romanian excellence through the Romanian Personalities Album, an annual editorial endeavor that brings together 100 Romanians who contribute to the development of society through their work. Among the names in this edition is the director Emanuel Pârvu, one of the strong voices of contemporary Romanian cinema.
The selection confirms the path of a creator who manages to tell, through cinema, relevant stories about the realities and tensions of today's world, contributing to shaping an authentic image of Romania on the international cultural scene.
Global recognition came with the feature film "Trei kilometri până la capătul lumii" (Three Kilometers to the End of the World), presented at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Palme d'Or and awarded the Queer Palm, a prize given to productions that address sensitive and necessary themes of identity and freedom. The film was subsequently also awarded the prize for directing at the Jerusalem International Film Festival, reinforcing the director's international career.
For Emanuel Pârvu, attending Cannes is a major professional milestone, comparable to reaching the highest peak of his profession: "I think that, for people who direct films, the Cannes Film Festival is a kind of Everest of this profession. I have been there both as an actor and as a director, and that makes me feel fulfilled."
The director talks about his artistic journey as a natural construction, in which each stage - from independent short films to large-scale projects - has meant experience and the joy of a job well done: "I enjoy every time I enter a project, no matter the side of the camera. There have been things I've enjoyed doing, from student days to collaborations with very big directors."
The inclusion in the Romanian Personalities Album has, in his vision, also a symbolic dimension, linked to the responsibility of the current generations towards the future: "It is very honorable and beautiful, in the hope that we manage to leave things in place for what is to come."
Beyond the artistic performance, Emanuel Pârvu draws attention to the decisive role that education and culture play in the evolution of a society: "If we continue to have no funding in the educational and cultural system, it will only get worse. I believe that only education and culture make society better and more aware of its surroundings."
The Romanian Personalities Album is an editorial project of the Dan Voiculescu Foundation for the Development of Romania that annually brings to the forefront people who define contemporary Romania through real contributions in research, education, medicine, art, sports or civic leadership. The selection aims at the concrete impact on the communities and the way these personalities build, through what they do, a solid image of Romania nationally and internationally.
With the inclusion of Emanuel Pârvu, the current edition confirms once again that cultural performance is not only artistic expression, but also a form of public responsibility - that of telling, with lucidity and courage, the stories that define us as a society.
