The release of the "Personalities of the Year in Romania" album, created by the Dan Voiculescu Foundation for the Development of Romania, raises an essential question: how does today's performance that really matters for the future of the country look like? This is not about media notoriety or public positions, but about people who, through measurable results, connect Romania to leading international fields.

A relevant example is the inclusion of researcher Octavian Bucur in this volume dedicated to the 100 contemporary personalities with real impact. His professional career illustrates a type of excellence less visible to the general public, but with structural effects: frontier biomedical research and Romania's integration into the major European genomics networks.

In a context in which personalized medicine and genomic analysis are becoming increasingly important for health systems, the work coordinated by Octavian Bucur at the Institute for Research-Development in Genomics has allowed Romania to actively participate in major European initiatives such as Genome of Europe. The project, officially launched in 2024, has a budget of 45 million euro and aims to create a common genomic data infrastructure with direct applications in research and medical practice.

The international relevance of his work is also confirmed by the invitation to represent Romania at the NATO Biotechnology Conference, a strategic forum that brought together experts in the field of biotechnology and health safety. Such presences are not mere formalities, but indicate that Romanian expertise is starting to be part of global discussions about the future of health and biomedical technologies.

At the same time, his academic contributions remain anchored in fundamental research. The 2024 paper published in the journal Epigenetics & Chromatin, which examines the impact of long-read nanopore sequencing technologies on the study of DNA methylation, brings to the forefront tools with significant clinical potential, particularly in oncology. It is the kind of research that does not produce spectacular results overnight, but builds the scientific basis for tomorrow's medicine.

The album launched by the Dan Voiculescu Foundation for the Development of Romania functions, in this sense, as a document of the active present. It sets benchmarks at a time when Romanian society needs credible examples of competence and continuity. The inclusion of researchers such as Octavian Bucur shows that development is not an abstract concept, but the result of sustained efforts, often carried out between laboratories, institutions and international collaborations.
