Dan Voiculescu Foundation for the Development of Romania, in partnership with EasyChess, is organizing chess courses for gifted children and young people aged 8 to 18 from 27 January to 2 March 2024.
Chess is an excellent activity and a valuable tool of strategy and logic, recognized by international experts in studies for the development of intellectual and social skills of gifted children. The game has multiple benefits such as stimulating strategic thinking, developing cognitive ability, problem solving, developing creativity and concentration, and decision making. Psychologists also claim that playing chess helps develop children's social and emotional skills, such as managing stress and accepting failure.
How and when the courses will take place
The courses start on 27 January and will run weekly on Saturdays, starting at 10am, for 6 weeks. Each course session will last 50 minutes. The 7th week, specifically Saturday, March 9, 2024 at 10:00 am, will be the Chess Tournament. The competition occasions the application of acquired knowledge and testing the level of competitiveness.
Classes will cover theoretical and practical aspects of the game of chess, including piece moves, basic strategies and tactics:
- Principles in the opening
- Position analysis
- Tactical ideas (double attack, breakthrough attack)
- Tactical ideas (counter-attack, linking, luring)
- Pawn finishes
- Types of rooks
How to register
Registration for the chess course is free and must be done online by 19 January 2024 by parents or legal guardians by completing the Registration Form, available on the official website www.fundatiadanvoiculescu.ro. Participants will be selected on the basis of test results, subject to availability of places. Testing of participants will take place on Saturday 20 January at 10:00 online via the Zoom platform and a list of participants selected following the test results will be announced on Wednesday 24 January.
