Simona Chiru, a young and promising talent in the field of Romanian sports, and a member of the "100 Youngsters for Romania's Development" campaign, which is organised at the national level by the Dan Voiculesulescu Foundation for the Development of Romania, made history at the World Championship of Ice Water Swimming. This event took place from January 14-18, 2025, in Molveno, Italy.
The water temperature, which ranged from 0.5 to 1.8 degrees Celsius, did not hinder Simona, who demonstrated remarkable physical endurance and resolve. Her achievements at the world championship were noteworthy, as evidenced by the following results:
- World 2nd place in the 4x50m freestyle relay;
- World 3rd place in the 100m freestyle;
- World 5th place in 100m backstroke.
Simona's performances have been identified as a contributing factor to the success of the Romanian Team, which achieved a total of eight medals in the overall standings. The event, now in its sixth edition, serves as a platform for the world's leading ice-water swimmers to converge, and Simona Chiru's performance has been cited as evidence that Romania possesses highly accomplished competitors in the context of international competitions.
Simona Chiru demonstrated remarkable prowess at the Molveno competition and the 9th World InterUniversities Championships, held from 6-10 November 2024 in Rome, Italy. Representing the Academy of Economic Studies of Bucharest, along with Briana Gălușcă, and under the coordination of Professor Teodora Dominteanu, Simona emerged victorious, securing four medals.
- 1st place in 200m mixed;
- 2nd place 200m freestyle;
- 3rd place 50m freestyle;
- 3rd place 50m backstroke.
