Iustin Petcu, Romania's Mental Arithmetic Champion and member of the "100 Youngsters for Romania's Development" campaign of the Dan Voiculescu Foundation for the Development of Romania, wins the 1st place at the International "Abacus" Championship in Amsterdam. Doha next

Iustin Petcu, one of the most promising young talents in the "100 Youngsters for Romania's Development" initiative, recently secured the title of international champion at the "Abacus" Mental Arithmetic Championship in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. At the tender age of eight, Iustin has already made a name for himself on the international mental arithmetic competition circuit, showcasing remarkable speed and precision in solving intricate calculations. In November, he will represent Romania at another esteemed event in the Qatari capital, Doha, further contributing to the country's prestige.

The year has been a notable success for the young Justin. He was required to complete 100 mental calculations in just two minutes, 30 calculations in 30 seconds and 50 calculations in one minute. The competition in Kuala Lumpur brought together 450 young people from 19 countries, but Justin's remarkable abilities enabled him to secure the title of champion, thereby establishing his reputation as one of the most gifted children in the world.

The remarkable achievements of Justin Petcu can be attributed to the Japanese method of mental arithmetic, an innovative technique that employs the Japanese abacus, the soroban, to foster both mathematical precision and the capacity to concentrate and exercise patience. The method has a profound effect on children's cognitive development, stimulating both hemispheres of the brain and enhancing their coordination. Initially, children utilise the soroban to solve problems, but subsequently, they mentally simulate the device, performing intricate calculations with their mind alone. This distinctive technique markedly stimulates the right hemisphere, which is responsible for imagination and creativity, transforming the calculations into potent visualisation and memory exercises.

Through his exceptional talent and unwavering determination, Iustin Petcu serves as an exemplary role model for young people in Romania. His participation in the international mental arithmetic championships not only affords him personal recognition but also positions Romania as a prominent contender in global educational competitions, showcasing the remarkable potential of our younger generation in areas of excellence. The Dan Voiculescu Foundation for the Development of Romania provides invaluable support to such young individuals, facilitating their growth and success.
