This interactive course combines theory with hands-on activities to give participants a clear understanding of how ChatGPT works and its applicability in various domains. The course emphasizes experimentation, critical thinking and creativity.
Session 1 - Discovering Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ChatGPT
- Participants will enter the world of AI, exploring the basics, definitions and differences between AI, Machine Learning and Deep Learning.
- They will discuss why AI has become so important, given the explosion of data, the increase in computing power and the many practical applications (from video recommendations and voice recognition to virtual assistants).
- Participants will discover how a language model such as ChatGPT works, how it trains on text and its limitations (hallucinations, errors, the need for source checking).
- Through a hands-on activity, participants will explore the ChatGPT interface, ask questions and observe how the answers vary depending on how the prompt is formulated.
- The session concludes with a discussion on the importance of critical thinking and creativity when interacting with AI technology.
Session 2 - Prompt engineering and multimodal AI applications
- Participants will learn the basic principles of prompt engineering - clarity, context and specificity - through practical examples, such as prompts tailored to the students or for a variety of response formats.
- The course introduces various AI applications: image generation (using tools such as DALL-E, Midjourney or Stable Diffusion), image-to-text (OCR and captioning), text-to-speech and speech-to-text.
- Participants will practice formulating prompts to generate images and experiment with converting text to audio.
- It will also address ethical issues related to the use of AI, such as copyright, the risks of deepfake and identifying misinformation.
Session 3 - Building AI agents in Google Colab
- Participants will be introduced to the Google Colab environment, an online tool that allows running code without local installations, and will learn how to create a new notebook with a Google account.
- The course explains the concept of "system prompt" and how it differs from "user prompt" and "assistant prompt", and presents a simple example of Python code that calls ChatGPT.
- Participants will have the opportunity to build their own personalized AI agent by choosing a specific prompt system (e.g. an assistant for improving math skills or for reading recommendations).
- Ways to refine prompts will be discussed, as well as practical issues related to the technical limitations and potential costs of using the ChatGPT API.
Session 4 - Final exercise, presentations and recap
- In the final session, each participant or team will choose a theme and create an AI assistant in Google Colab, integrating also a visual component by generating a representative image (e.g. a logo or a cover) using creative prompts.
- The projects will be presented in an interactive session, and the top three projects will be voted on by peers.
- Finally, participants will discover future trends in AI and receive additional resources - from tutorials and YouTube channels to information on contests and hackathons - to further their exploration in this innovative field.
- The course will conclude with a review of the key concepts and a question and answer session, highlighting the main themes and practical applications of the knowledge acquired.
Places on the course are limited and are based on the results of the online pre-test.
