The Dan Voiculesulescu Foundation for the Development of Romania launches a challenge: what should a national platform dedicated to Romanian students for a successful career look like?1

The Dan Voiculescu Foundation for the Development of Romania has assumed the role of an educational partner in the Forum of Romanian Students from Abroad, which is scheduled to conclude on 4 September at the Palace of Parliament. During the course of this event, the Foundation has presented a topic of national interest to the younger generation: the characteristics of a competitive workplace that would encourage the retention of young graduates within the country.

The concepts proposed will be monetised to establish a national platform dedicated to Romanian graduates, both those residing in Romania and those in the diaspora. This pioneering initiative responds to the pressing necessity to assist young graduates in securing competitive employment in a context where the Romanian labour market is confronted with significant challenges.

The fundamental principles of the platform will be established during a debate at the Forum of Romanian Students from Abroad. This event aims to elucidate the urgent issues confronting young graduates and to ascertain practical solutions for their integration into the labour market.

The current situation in Romania is such that one in four young university graduates are unable to secure employment. This figure is even more concerning when one considers the experiences of those who have studied abroad, with 65% of them choosing not to return home. This trend is not only a cause for concern, but also represents a significant loss for Romania, a country that has invested in the education of these young people but is unable to provide them with the opportunities they require to develop their careers within the country.

In 2023, the integration rate of recent graduates into the Romanian labour market was 74.8%, which is one of the lowest rates in the European Union. This places Romania in third place alongside Greece and Italy. These figures reflect the structural challenges that Romania faces in terms of integrating young people into the labour market. If these challenges are not properly addressed, they are likely to worsen in the coming years.

The recently unveiled platform, spearheaded by the Dan Voiculescu Foundation for the Development of Romania, has the potential to serve as a benchmark for Romanian students, irrespective of their academic institutions. The platform is designed to enhance young individuals' access to competitive employment opportunities, both within Romania and beyond, with the ultimate goal of curbing the outmigration of talent and fortifying the national economy by leveraging local human capital.

It is imperative that Romania fosters the talents and visions of its younger demographic. The Dan Voiculescu Foundation for the Development of Romania plays a pivotal role in equipping these individuals with the requisite support to secure gainful employment that aligns with Western standards.

The initiative of the Dan Voiculescu Foundation for the Development of Romania is an important step in the right direction aimed at encouraging the integration of young graduates into the labor market and contributing to the development of a sustainable and innovative economy.
