Dr. Emanuela Mercore, expert of The Scientific Senate of the FDVDR: unprocessed food is the key to long-term health

In a dialogue with Andreea Cigolea in the programme "Health Tip" on Antena 3 CNN, Dr. Emanuela Mercore Huțanu, a scientific expert at the Dan Voiculescu Foundation for the Development of Romania, emphasised the pivotal function of unprocessed foods in ensuring long-term health. She elaborated that, despite the prevalence of high-protein diets, a balanced intake of fibre, vitamins and minerals from plant sources constitutes a more sustainable solution for weight control and the prevention of chronic diseases.

The physician posits that the primary error lies in the overestimation of protein requirements and the concomitant disregard of dietary fibre. "The prevailing concern that arises from the consumption of fruits, vegetables and whole grains is the potential compromise to essential proteins. However, this apprehension is erroneous. Provided individuals adhere to a diversified diet, the likelihood of protein malnutrition is minimal," she asserted. Conversely, fibre plays a pivotal role in regulating blood sugar, ensuring optimal transit and fostering a healthy microbiome.

Dr. Emanuela Mercore Huțanu posits that the microbiome is regarded as the body's "second brain" and is imperative for optimal physical and mental well-being. She asserts that a balanced, adequately nourished microbiome fosters low inflammation, maintains normal weight, and reduces the risk of metabolic diseases. Dr. Huțanu advocates for the consumption of a minimum of 25-30 grams of fibre daily, predominantly from vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains.

Concurrently, the physician asserted that excessive consumption of dairy and meat, which are abundant in saturated fats, can result in elevated triglycerides and increased insulin sensitivity, particularly in individuals predisposed to prediabetes. Rather than the complete elimination of these foods, it would be optimal to consume them in moderation and to prioritise a plant-based diet.

In the context of adopting a more balanced lifestyle, Dr. Mercore Huțanu asserts that immediate solutions are not available: 'We are unable to alter our habits instantaneously, but we can initiate this process by making simple choices, such as incorporating more vegetables in every meal and progressively reducing the consumption of processed foods'. Consequently, the message from the Scientific Senate of the FDVDR is unequivocal: a diet consisting of unprocessed products can assist in maintaining good health, a normal weight, and long-term balance.
