It is estimated that there are about 200,000 academically gifted children under 15 years old in Romania - about 6% of the total number of students (source of estimate: NAGC - National Association for Gifted Children, NW, Washington; the percentage is applied to the population of 3.211 million children under 15 years old cf. INS: Press release no 143 of 26.06.2012).
An impressive number! Although there are no national studies that statistically track the incidence of giftedness (presence of multiple intelligences according to Howard Gardner) among the population of children, the number of gifted and high potential (gifted or multiple intelligences) children is increasing, depending on the number of giftedness categories used in the estimation. They are NOT identified within the education system on a routine basis, with international test batteries, through observations, recommendations or interviews (as stipulated by Law 17/2007), so they do NOT exist.
