At the age of 17, when most teenagers are looking for direction, Ovidiu-Ștefan Călin was already climbing the world podium of academic excellence. A student in the 11th grade at the National Military College "Tudor Vladimirescu" in Craiova, he impressed the jury at the NEO Science International Olympiad in Orlando, USA: he won two gold medals and confirmed that performance is ageless when backed by discipline and ambition.
At the competition, over 200 students from around 25 countries participated, and the young Romanian stood out in two of the most difficult tests - physics and mathematics - where he came second in physics and fifth in mathematics, results rewarded with two gold medals. For Ovidiu, this was his first participation in an international exact sciences competition, but his debut was spectacular, confirming that Romanian performance can compete at the highest world level. His exceptional results brought him national recognition: Ovidiu-Ștefan Călin was included in the campaign "100 Youngsters for Romania's Development", run by the Dan Voiculescu Foundation for the Development of Romania, a project that promotes the elites of the young generation and the performances that contribute to the country's image and progress.
The road to the international podium started with a bronze medal at the national stage of the NEO Science Olympiad, which qualified him for the global finals. Behind the success are months of intense study, late-night exercises and a discipline shaped by both a passion for science and the rigors of the military environment.
"On one day I had the exam, 40 questions within an hour and a quarter for each subject, and on another day they gave the prizes. I was nervous as it was my first participation and I didn't expect this result. Obviously, I wanted to get a very good result, but I did not expect two gold medals, second place in physics and fifth place in mathematics", said Ovidiu-Ștefan Călin.
Participating in the competition was also a life experience. During his visit to the US, the young man ended up at the NASA center, where he witnessed a rocket launch belonging to Elon Musk's company - a moment which he says confirmed that science is the path he wants to follow.
Beyond his academic achievements, Ovidiu is also a competitive sportsman. He plays handball and plays for both the high school team and for the Bucharest based athletes of CSS 2, with whom he participates in the national championship. The joy of sports blends perfectly with the discipline of studying, and the choice of a military career was no accident:
"The idea of a military career was inspired by my father since 5th grade, even though he's not in the military and we don't have members of the military in our family. He simply thought it was future-oriented and that it suited me."
The distinctions obtained at NEO Science are not an end point, but the beginning of a path that promises to take Romania's name higher and higher in international competitions. For Ovidiu, success means not only medals, but confirmation that passion, hard work and discipline can turn a dream into a reality with global impact.
