Romania conquers the space. The Zenith team amazed NASA, won the Grand Prize at the NSS for a space station and joined the "100 Youngsters for Romania's Development" campaign of the Dan Voiculescu Foundation for the Development of Romania

Thirty-six teams, 178 Romanian students, 35 prizes and only one Grand Prize for the Zenith team of Sfântul Sava National High School in Bucharest, at the prestigious international competition, NSS Gerard K. The team, made up of Sasha-Mihail Iosifescu, Ioan-Nectarie Ivana, Sophia-Maia Iordache, Vlad-Ioan Daraban, Alexandra-Diana Nae, Oana-Andreea Bordei, Darius-Andrei Cașcaval, Theodor-Mihai Crainic, got involved in the Dan Voculescu Foundation for Romania's Development campaign "100 Youngsters for Romania's Development".

Their work, called "Zenith Station", was picked as the best out of more than 4,900 entries sent in by 26,000 students from 25 countries. The award is a global recognition of the creativity, hard work and scientific vision that Romanian students have demonstrated in tackling one of the most ambitious challenges of the future: inhabiting space. The Zenith team was invited to speak at the International Space Development Conference (ISDC), which was organised by the NSS from 19-22 June in Orlando, Florida. There, in front of NASA representatives, industry experts and space leaders, the students will present the 'Zenith Station' as a symbol of the younger generation's ability to shape the future of mankind.

"Zenith Station" isn't just an idea, it's a proper plan for a space habitat that could house up to 20,000 people. The project looks at some of the big challenges we're facing in the 21st century, like running out of resources, overpopulation, environmental crises and the risks of really bad events like a replica of the Carrington Event - a solar storm that could paralyse the planet's critical infrastructure.

"Zenith Station" is like a launch pad for the future of space exploration, but it's also like a social laboratory where science, technology and human values come together to create a new kind of civilisation. The Zenith Team had to figure out a lot of complicated scientific and technological stuff to make this project happen. Students from all sorts of different subjects, like aerospace engineering, applied physics, biotechnology, energy, architecture, psychology and economics, got together to create a sustainable, functional and resilient colony under extraterrestrial conditions. They came up with ideas for artificial gravity, protection against cosmic radiation, self-sufficiency in energy, and a social and economic model to support a stable community focused on research and development.

The Zenith team's success is a huge achievement for St. Sava National College and Romania as a whole. It's a clear sign that young Romanians have the vision, knowledge and determination to actively participate in building the future of humanity in space. The Zenith Station project shows that education that focuses on excellence, teamwork and thinking across different subjects can come up with not just big ideas, but real solutions that have a global impact.
